What does the parish nurse do?
Our nurse provides advice and help on health issues. She is not a replacement or substitute for NHS services, but she will help you access these services if necessary. She works alongside existing NHS services and is currently involved in a pilot study for Parish Nursing Ministries UK (a registered charity) to identify local needs and try to establish sustainable and accessible provision for any requirements.
She is currently involved in running short first aid for children training sessions for Mums at the Mother and Toddler group on Friday mornings once each half term.
She is also organising the health screening for the mens health breakfast on 21st April. (See 'events for men')
She is looking to raise awareness of the role amongst nurses at local GP surgeries to develop practical ways of supporting them and finding out where the needs are.
When is the parish nurse available?
The nurse is available at the church on Fridays between 9:30 and 2:30 during school term time. Please call the church
office to confirm her availability to avoid an unnecessary visit.
Why does the church have a parish nurse?
Parish Nursing is a relatively new organisation to the UK but developed in the USA over 20 years ago. It began because of growing awareness of unmet health needs in the community. There are now 40 parish nurses based in churches around the UK, one of whom is based at Frimley Baptist Church. These nurses are qualified and registered with the NMC and abide by the code of professional conduct.
Historically the church has always played an important role in health care, developing hospitals and hospices and training staff. Then, with the advent of th NHS, the church took more of a back seat role. Now, however, the NHS can not cope with the demands made upon it and many key areas of health service is struggling through lack of funding. The church is looking to provide support to it's local communities by filling a few gaps.
Jesus was concerned about every aspect of people's lives. He fed those who were hungry and healed those who were sick. He is our example and, as His followers, we try to help others around us. Our parish nurse is just one of the ways in which we try and do this.
